Yarn Ball Boogie

I have one word - SQUISH

I have another free pattern for you. Sorry I’ve been MIA for a minute.

Fashion Week here in NYC is winding down. It’s always a beast of a time, one reason being the type of clients it brings to the job. Fashion people. Lots of ‘em. And it’s a little strange since I feel like I love those “types”. But at my job, you can learn to hate people. And fast. So I just act like I’m a supermodel most of the time and imagine I’m on the catwalk.

I haven’t been discovered as of yet. I’ll keep you posted. :)

My friend/photographer Nodeth Vang came through in a big way for me last week.

Pattern link HERE.

This hat is so SQUISHY I can’t even take it. You’ll love it.

Thanks for taking time off your busy runway schedule for the pattern, I love it! Also, I’m super curious to know who your fave Project Runway designer is as the moment–personally I’m all about Kenley cuz I love her big mouth and retro stylings…

Looks a bit challenging for me, but I’ll give it a go if I can find some decent yarn. Two questions: when do I use the 10.5 needles? When I start working back & forth? And how do I knit one into the row below? Thanks!

  5. September 12th, 2008 | 11:09 am

erin - shit! thanks for bringing that to my attention…..yeah - when you’re done with the ribbing you switch to 10.5’s.

and i SUCK at explaining things. but basically instead of knitting a stitch like normal, you insert your needle into the loop below the one on the needle and knit THAT one like normal. if you youtube brioche videos there are only techniques that are all complicated (for a beginner) the way I do it is easier and looks the same.

There’s a handy video here for knitting into the row below. This site helps me soooo much. I can’t learn from just reading about it.

Love the pattern and your choice of colorway is *very* appealing. Also your model - so gorgeous…sigh. Tell me, if I knit and wear the hat, will I look like that?

Ditto erin on the knittinghelp.com - a real lifesaver.

Fabulous! Love the play of the blues and browns, and of course the photo is gorgeous. It makes me want to take another crack at a brioche beret I knit in cashmere (the one in my blog bio picture) and then had to rip because it grrrrreeeewww.

What a great pattern, John and the model is gorgeous. If I knit up your hat will it make ME look that hot? :-) You’d have to rename it ‘the miracle hat’ if it did but you’d make millions!

  19. September 12th, 2008 | 9:57 pm

    totes deck brah.

  20. September 13th, 2008 | 12:08 am

Fabulous pattern!! What a great picture!

Though I didn’t have to work for the people that ran Fashion Week, my boss always did. And that meant that I was left in charge of the studio making his work while he was gone. When it was all over, I would be rewarded with celebrity gossip.

It’s awesome that you act like a model. He said that a lot of his job was hand holding and reassuring.

I heart u. I’ve been looking for a pattern like this for a long time b/c I was too lazy to try and make one up. Thank you sooooo very much for sharing - I would have bought it too, if you had offered it for sale!!!

  22. September 14th, 2008 | 8:39 am

Thanks for the cute pattern. The hat looks great on the model too!

I’m noticing hat designs are evolving into these poofy styles halfway between a beret and a beanie. Me likey!

  23. September 16th, 2008 | 11:54 am

I missed you while you were on hiatus! Took the opportunity to mosey through the archives (I’m a relatively new reader).

    LOVE the hat.

  24. September 17th, 2008 | 5:00 pm

I seriously need to knit this even though I will never get to wear it unless I sweat to death. Off to the yarn store!

  25. September 19th, 2008 | 7:28 am

Adorable hat! I’m not a beret fan, but that hat is waaaaay better! Must. Knit. The. Hat!

  26. September 19th, 2008 | 10:50 pm

this is a beautiful hat! thank you for posting the picture and pattern! is this really worsted weight yarn? it looks so much thicker than that!

  27. September 22nd, 2008 | 10:12 am

I think I’ve run across your blog/work several times in the past and always say to myself “I really like this guys stuff…knitting, words, attitude, ink, etc”

and coming across it again today was the perfect way to start my week…and made me miss my own studio and art of YEARS past

    have a great day!

love your hat design, just what I needed, such a cool hat pattern!

  29. September 24th, 2008 | 7:13 pm

Your stuff is so yummy, but do you ever post patterns that don’t require a circular needle? Yeah, I’m not quite there yet–tried them once and couldn’t get the hang of it.

I came to this site via Knit and Tonic, so my comment is very late - hope you get it! Even though the pdf pattern is free, my download has two lines of gibberish between the “knit into the stitch below” and the dcrease instructions. Help?

I don’t know what I am doing wrong, but I can’t get the main part of the hat started right! I have tried it three times now. I am not a novice knitter, but this is driving me crazy. I was actually knitting a childs 2 skein sweater in the same pattern. I was doing fine on that, I found it in my “old” stash of abandoned projects. I ripped it apart to use for the hat and now I can’t get it right?

So, you knit the ribbing in the round, then switch to knitting back and forth on the circular needle. Is there a seam to sew then? It seems like my stitched get all screwed up midway. I did a little sample of 20 stitches with another yarn and it worked out good on two needles.

    Any suggestions?

I have it right now and finished it today. I was misinterpreting the directions. I will put a photo of it on Ravelry.

    My Ravelry ID is ManyHooks.

I just stumbled onto your blog today!! I’m so thrilled because this hat is just too too cute!

    Thank you for sharing!

I love this pattern and started it last night, but have a question - I’ve switched to 10.5, 16″ length circulars, and have done one row of “knit 1, knit into row below, knit 1….” but won’t I have to switch to a longer length 10.5 circular as I go along, as I am doubling the number of stiches in each row every time I complete a row?

Hey thanks for the pattern (like you haven’t been told enough)! I have a question, though. How do you turn with the circular needles without it looking like a round? Somewhat of a novice knitter so..yeah. Can’t seem to figure it out.

Dani - if you’re doing it right, the number of stitches on your needles should stay the same. I would suggest finding a tutorial video to help you figure it out.

Love the hat, it’s gorgeous, but I do have a question - is the main part of the hat supposed to be in garter stitch? It doesn’t look that way in the pic, but the pattern would seem to indicate otherwise. Or am I missing something?
